Roughouts are great for someone who doesn’t have access to a bandsaw or scroll saw. Roughouts let you get right to carving the details without having to chunk away at a bunch of unwanted wood. Most of the roughouts you can find online are not as expensive as you think and range from $12 to $35 depending on the size.
Cowboys and Santas
Caricature cowboys and Santas seem to be the most popular. There are many varieties of each and most of them can be be carved in a couple hours. When you purchase a roughout you will receive a print out of 4 different photo angles and usually a photo of the face. The photo sheet will give you an idea of how the finished piece can look but you can also add your own design or details.
